What is an inference?

Making an inference means figuring out something that is not directly stated by using clues and what you already know.

Inference Formula

Clues from the text + What I already know = My inference

Think Like a Reader

- Look for clues in the text
- Think about what you already know
- Make a smart conclusion

Example

What do you think the weather is like? How do you know?

“Lino grabbed his umbrella and put on his raincoat before leaving the house.”

Clues:
  • umbrella
  • raincoat

What we know:
People use these when it rains.

Inference:
It is probably raining outside, or it looks like it's going to rain.

Try this

Look carefully at the picture and answer the questions.

  • What can you see?
  • What is mom doing?
  • How do you think Saya is feeling?
  • What clues help you know?

Possible answer:

Saya is not feeling well. Her mom is checking her temperature and putting a cold cloth on her head.

Clues:

  • thermometer
  • cloth on Saya's head
  • tired expression on Saya's face

What we know:
People who are sick often look tired.
People with a fever use a thermometer and a wet cloth to lower their temperature.
